What Tal‑Qroqq is
The Tal‑Qroqq Sports Complex sits on Triq Maria Teresa Spinelli in Gżira, a few minutes off the main road into Msida. It’s Malta’s national sports facility, run by SportMalta — the government body that manages public sports infrastructure across the country. The Maltese Olympic Committee has its headquarters here. So do a long list of national sports associations.
If you’ve never been: it’s the kind of place that feels surprisingly substantial. The 50-metre Olympic-sized pool is the biggest in Malta. There’s a 25-metre training pool next to it. The gym floor is well-equipped — racks, dumbbells, machines, cardio kit. Two squash courts. Five-a-side football pitches. Heated water year-round. Changing facilities that work.
It’s also, importantly, open to the public. You don’t have to be an athlete to train there. SportMalta runs membership tiers that anyone resident in Malta can sign up to.
Why we coach there
We’ve tried most of the gyms in Malta. Tal‑Qroqq is where we coach because:
- It has the equipment. Free weights, racks, machines, cardio, pool, indoor sprint surfaces — under one roof.
- It’s accessible. A short drive or bus ride from most of Malta. Parking exists.
- It’s heated year-round. Including the pool, which matters in February.
- It’s the proper space. Plenty of room for our small groups without colonising a corner of someone else’s commercial gym.
- The membership is fair. SportMalta’s pricing is public-sector — significantly cheaper than most private gyms in Malta.
We do not own Tal‑Qroqq. We’re not paid by SportMalta. We’re personal trainers who use the venue because it’s the best public option in Malta.
Membership, separate from coaching
Important to understand: the SportMalta membership is paid directly to SportMalta. It covers your access to the facility — the gym floor, changing rooms, and pool. Our personal training fees pay for our coaching alongside you. The two are separate.
When you sign up with us, we’ll point you to the right tier for what you’re going to use. Most of our clients keep an annual gym + pool membership because they use both. You can find SportMalta’s current rates on their venue booking page.
What your first session is like
We meet you at the entrance. We walk you through the building so you know where everything is. We do your assessment on the gym floor — movement screen, mobility check, basic strength baselines if appropriate, a short conversation about your goal and your history. About 60 minutes.
After that first session you’ll have:
- A clear sense of where you are right now (no shame about it — we’ve been the 145kg client too)
- The first week of programming, written by hand
- A nutrition plan from Miriam if that’s part of your package
- The MyPT app installed and your account set up
- A standing slot in a small group, matched to your level
The session-to-session work happens in groups of 2–4 by default. Goal-matched, level-matched, schedule-matched. You’ll see the same people each week and there’s a quiet camaraderie that builds.
The honest bits
Things we’ll tell you up front, because they matter:
- Parking can be tight at peak times. Tuesday and Thursday evenings are busy. Most of our clients adjust to earlier or later slots.
- The pool is shared with national programmes. Lane availability shifts based on competitions and training schedules. Use the SportMalta calendar.
- Membership processing takes a day or two. You can train with us before it’s processed but you’ll want it sorted within the first two weeks.
- The complex has cafés/refreshments but no full meals. Bring your own water and post-workout snack.
Getting started
If you’re curious about training with us, the services site describes the packages and the booking process. We start most new clients with a free intro session — no pressure, no upsell, just a 30-minute conversation in person at Tal‑Qroqq so we can see if we’re a fit for each other. Most of the time we are. Sometimes we aren’t, and we’ll happily point you to someone else.
Tal‑Qroqq is the right place to start. We just happen to be there when you arrive.
